I have a mediational interest in the commonalities and differences between orality and literacy. When I look at literacy through the concentric circles of the pupils of my eyes, I like to ask questions about the transmission of knowledge through literacy and orality.
As a contemporary Coast Salish artist, I am intrigued by some of the ways in which western culture has begun to perpetuate literacy. With audio books, we can hEAR literacy.

This circular Coast Salish design depicts four faces which share the same sacred, circular, middle mouth. The four faces forming a circle symbolize the cycle of each generation, while the middle mouth symbolizes the perpetuation of the oral tradition.
As the literate lessLIE, I am a contemporary Coast Salish artUS who is
attempting to join orality and literacy through the mediational medium of
Coast Salish art.

of the Coast Salish future.
When I conceived this design, I wanted to evoke the visual simplicity of a glyph or a logo (greek, "Logos," meaning "words" or "speech").
