ARTIST’S STATEMENT
This rectangular Coast Salish design was inspired by Coast Salish carved combs, which were utilized for combing wool during the weaving process. In the center of the design is the eye of a Coast Salish guardian spirit dancer. The eye in the center symbolizes the vision of the guardian spirit dancer, while the circles, ovals, and trigons above and below the eye symbolize the visually vague and ambiguous suggestion of the guardian spirit. The subtle circle perceivable inside the eye, the sacRED vision, is an attempt to mediate between Coast Salish visual art and literacy.
One of the undertakings of my work is to mediate between the spiRITUAL visions of traditional Coast Salish culture, and the Western sense of the word “vision,” which implies a deep understanding of one’s culture and a vision of the potential cultural direction one’s culture can take.
