Calvin Hunt

Since 1993 Alcheringa Gallery has been privileged to represent the art of the Hunt family on Vancouver Island. The Hunt family has had an unbroken history of art creation since 1897 when George Hunt, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, began collecting carvings for anthropologist Franz Boaz. These were ultimately destined for the collection of the Museum of Natural History in New York.

To crown a brilliant career senior artist Chief Calvin Hunt draws on his Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, and Tlingit roots to create a stunning array of deeply significant carvings that showcase the treasures in his family. Recognized internationally in Europe and Japan for his monumental sculpture, each of the works in the exhibition has been carefully crafted and balanced with functionality, artistry and personal inspiration. Renowned for his interpretation of traditional culture, Alcheringa Gallery is honored to present his first solo exhibition.

Below you will find just a selection of work that is now available. The full catalogue will be available August 25th and will also include a small 10' Totem Pole, Bookwus Mask, 2 drums and more.

All works are subject to pre-sale.
