Pacific Prints 2006

Our much anticipated annual print exhibition is upon us again.

This year we are honoured to include a selection of remarkable images spanning the years from 1979 to 2004 from the collection of Charlene Thompson, widow of the late, great Nuu chah nulth artist Art Thompson. Included are prints created early in his career characterized by a single elegant image through to the complex drum designs of the mid nineties, culminating in the print designed by Art himself as his memorial and published after his death.

In the 70's renowned Kwakwaka'wakw artist Doug Cranmer created a series of abstract paintings on mahogany plywood. Three of the images 'Killer Whales', 'River Monster' and 'Canoe' were produced as serigraphs. We are happy to announce that one more of these stunning images, 'Young Ravens' has been created as a limited edition silkscreen print, scheduled for release on January 31, 2006. Please email the gallery to reserve a copy.

We are also pleased to announce exciting new releases from Coast Salish artists, Maynard Johnny Jr, lessLIE, Chris Paul and Susan Point.

From leading Torres Strait artist Dennis Nona we present an exquisite, hand coloured new linoprint entitled'Bai'. Inspired by coastal life and family traditions Nona's linocuts derive from his wood-carving background from Badu Island. With this work he further demonstrates his groundbreaking contribution to the art of linoprinting.

While best known for his linoprints Nona has recently created a series of stunning etchings. As part of this exhibition we are delighted to offer three of these recently released works. These images all relate to the cultural use of traditional plants. Sazi (also the titles of the print) is a special root used by Torres Strait islanders to intoxicate fish to ensure an easy catch. Uzu Pui (Stone Fish) deliver a deadly sting, Del Pui a plant that grows on the shoreline helps to treat pain and aid healing. The third etching illustrates a wild plant, Myrta, which when slowly burnt glows like a coal and the resulting smoke repels insects such as mosquitoes and sandflies.

We hope that you enjoy this show and don't forget to browse our site for other graphic works in the collection.
