SHINE: Adornments of the Northwest Coast

A warm welcome to our annual Holiday exhibition. This year, we have gathered a variety of beautiful pieces of Northwest Coast artwork that are all unique yet relate to the warmth and light of the season. "Shine" is the theme of the exhibition, and it is one that has been interpreted by our esteemed artists in many ways:in jewellery of silver and gold, in intricate pieces of argillite, or in imagery associated with the bright lights of celestial bodies.

Here are just a few examples. In gleaming gold, Luke Marston has crafted a stunning bracelet depicting a frog and dragonfly. It is faithfully based on the traditional Coast Salish goat horn bracelets in its unique clasp design. Corrine Hunt has fashioned beautiful pieces in silver and gold, including this intricate silver brooch featuring Eagle and Raven, the bringer of light himself, titled "Lovebirds". Chris Paul's gold serpent Spindle Whorl pendant is just one of his brilliant gold pieces.

Christian White has created a unique and marvellous argillite pendant titled "Travelling Companions", and it casts a glow from the smooth surface of the stone to the intricate inlay of abalone in the eyes of Eagle and Raven as they sit in their canoe.

Celebrating the sun, moon and stars, Primrose Adams and Alfred Adams have again collaborated on a lovely miniature woven hat, adorned with the phases of the moon. Maynard Johnny Jr. has created a joyful painting called Harvest Moon, and Richard Sumner's tour de force is the world's smallest bentwood box - a treasure-sized box of light to hold that perfect ring of glowing gold or silver!

Rising star lessLIE has found yet another approach, using light as a medium in his painting, Bracelet deSIGN, by incorporating a shine right into the texture of the paint. Shine is taken literally in the lovely candle holders created by Corrine Hunt, like this one of Raven design, that will add a warm glow to any winter night.

We hope you enjoy the many ways our artists have approached the idea of "Shine" and we hope to help you find the glowing heart of the holiday season!
