The remarkable carving and painting of these functional works also make them stunning art objects that furnish the ceremonial houses of their peoples. This summer we celebrate tambourine styled drums from different regions of the Northwest Coast of Canada including works from Coast Salish artists Dylan Thomas, lessLIE, and Chris Paul, as well as a miniature box drum by renowned Kwakwaka'wakw carver Richard Sumner. Oceanic works include a magnificent slit gong drum or garamut from the late, legendary master carver Plasios Asapi from the Sepik River, and a magnificent ceremonial drum from the Gogodala Region of the Western province of Papua New Guinea, alongside ornately decorated tifa drums from the Asmat and Sentani regions of West Papua. Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, July 22, from 6 - 8 pm. The online catalogue will be available for preview at www.alcheringa-gallery.com on Friday, July 16.
