TONY HUNT JR.

Kwak waka'wakw artist Tony Hunt Jr. was born in 1961 into a wealth of tradition. His great-grandfather Mungo Martin has been credited with much of the revitalization of the Kwak waka'wakw culture in the latter half of the last century. His late grandfather Henry Hunt and his father, Hereditary Chief Tony Hunt, are both renowned Kwak waka'wakw carvers.

Tony Jr. is a highly accomplished artist, receiving particular acclaim as a mask maker. His work is sought by both museums and private collectors in many parts of the world. His family crests are "Raven" and "Sisiutl". Tony is an initiated "Hamatsa" dancer and has inherited the rights to many high ranking dances belonging to his family.

SHAWN KARPES

Shawn Karpes was raised in Whitehorse and did not encounter his Kwakwaka'wakw heritage until 1977. Carving was a new experience for him although one to which he was connected by birth. Shawn began training in1982 as part of a Native art programme sponsored by Victoria public schools. It was at this time that he began experimenting with three dimensional form. Shawn acknowledges Tony Hunt, Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick as major influences along with Fah Ambers from whom he learned the art of working in metals. Now as a mature accomplished artist Shawn brings to his work thoughtfulness, originality and a high degree of skill. His favourite medium is wood but he also works in gold and silver and paints in acrylic on canvas and paper.

LUKE MARSTON

Coast Salish artist Luke Marston, born in 1976, has grown up in a family of artists and has been carving since he was a child. Both his parents, Jane and David Marston, are experienced carvers who provided Luke with his introduction to the art and skill of carving. When first working Luke sought guidance from Nisga'a carver, Wayne Young. Simon Charlie has also been an influential teacher and Luke assisted him in the creation of four house posts. More recently he has been working at Thunderbird Park and has been influenced by artists there, in particular Shawn Karpes.

In addition to his wood carving Luke enjoys the medium of silver for expressing the legends and designs of the Coast Salish people.

RON TELEK

Ron Telek born in 1962 is a member of the Eagle clan of the Nisga'a nation. He has been carving since high school and has been working seriously as an artist since 1985. He acknowledges his uncle Norman Tait as a major influence however Ron has developed his own distinctive personal interpretation of the Nisga'a tradition. Ron's main medium is wood, primarily alder, but he also creates works using moose antler, mastadon ivory and periphorite. He often incorporates other materials such as bone, abalone and horsehair into his unique and masterful carvings.

WAYNE YOUNG

Nisga'a/Haida artist Wayne Young was born in 1959 and loved to draw from an early age. He received his first instruction in the techniques of Northwest Coast design at the age of fifteen and his first teacher was Dempsey Bob. From the mid eighties Wayne started to carve and dance. Well equipped by the instruction he received from his internationally renowned uncle Norman Tait, He embarked on a solo career. Wayne has received wide recognition for his totem poles carved from alder and also for his graphic ability which can be seen in both three and two dimensional works. His carvings are in collections around the world.
