The Story of Kanda and Tandimi
In the time of the ancestors a woman called Kanda used to cut the heads off of fish with a stone axe. This day she neglected to wash the blood off the axe. That night Kanda planned with her brothers to go fishing in the early hours of the morning. Around four o’clock the next morning she was awakened from sleep by the stone axe who had transformed into a woman. The woman came fishing with Kanda and her family. On their way home Kanda asked ‘the stone axe’ to wait while she relieved herself. However, when she emerged she found that all the canoes had left without her. She sat down sadly on the river bank and began to cry. At that moment a crocodile called Tandimi saw her tears and came to comfort her. They were married. In due course Kanda gave birth to three eggs. From them hatched two eagles and a crocodile and that is why on the roof finials of all Haus Tambarans can be seen a female figure representing the mother of the crocodile and a bird with the tail of a crocodile.
