Kaminibit Village is situated in the heart of the middle Sepik, surrounded by villages with distinct carving styles of their own. The village has long been known for its elegant flutes - contemporary carvers Norbert Kanda and Sylvester Tungi have made remarkable examples of this instrument. Norbert Kanda has visited the United States as a representative of his culture to give carving demonstrations. Both these carvers are leaders of the community in Kaminibit and we are honoured to have a superb example of a flute and stopper by Norbert in this exhibition. Graceful and elegant, it is exquisitely decorated with natural ochres.

Kaminibit is well known for ancestral figures which traditionally house Sepik water spirits. Brilliant young carvers Ronnie Bowie and Arnold Ambu have masterfully created their own interpretations of this form. The only female artist in this exhibition, Angelina Gumowe, has taken a village weaving craft which for many years has produced woven human figures to new heights with the creation of other creatures from her environment, such as roosters, chickens and crocodiles. In developing her art she recognized the value of using unusually shaped gourds as bases for animal forms instead of the rattan frames which had previously been used.
