ABOUT THE ARTIST

ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION:
"Solomon Island stories tell that groups of individuals, normally within the same family, would set forth on exploration trips to settle on new land. The travellers would often use the directions of the birds, dolphins, and landmarks to map their trek away from their original home. The travellers would go in large groups so that they could establish a community in the new land, but to also be prepared for any conflicts that may arise in their attempt to settle on a new land. No matter where the travellers ended their journey, they would be confident in the path that would take them home.

The dolphins are a sign of safe passage and of good luck. The markings below the dolphins represent the prized 'dolphin stones.' If you were to find a lucky stone, its dolphin would track its way directly to you, wherever you may be. Similarly, a turtle will return to the beach of its birth to lay its eggs during its reproduction period."
