Artist's Statement

"I started to carve in 1980. This carving is about Mandawa, the canoe woman who could not find fish. As she slept one night, a bird came into a dream and gave her the power to find fish. She was told to go to the river alone; there she changed into a bird, dove into the river, and found many fish."

- Francis Timbin
