Tim Paul
Humwitsa: stories and teachings

Image Index

Alcheringa Gallery TIM PAUL'S first solo exhibition, HUMWITSA: STORIES and TEACHINGS, opens at Alcheringa Gallery on Thursday, July 24, 1997. Eighteen major works have been completed for this exhibition. These include a full size and a model size totem pole; a transformation mask as well as a number of portrait, moon and sun masks; small cedar sculptures; two bowls, one of which is a canoe; and an acrylic on paper.

Humwitsa: Stories and Teachings is the culmination of more than forty years of Tim Paul absorbing the legends of his Nuu-Chah Nulth heritage from the elders of the Hesqiaht, Nuchat and Ehattesat villages of the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Tim Paul has honed his technical skills through decades of carving using traditional methods. As a young man, Tim realized the importance of preserving and passing on the knowledge and ways of the Nuu-Chah Nulth. This exhibition of his work is a distillation of that knowledge and a vivid expression of his commitment to share and fan the fires of his culture.

Throughout Humwitsa: Stories and Teachings Tim Paul probes the supernatural dimension while inscribing both the natural environment and ancient knowledge of his people. While the teachings of his elders is the clear and consistent element in Tim Paul's art, the means of expression is decidedly his own; form and content are innovatively unified.

Tim Paul's exhibition continues until August 16. Alcheringa is open daily Monday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 7:00 pm; Sunday from 12 - 5 pm. For further information, please contact Kerry Mason, Curator (250-383-8224).
