Vessels was an exciting new exhibition from the South Pacific and Northwest Coast. A variety of food and fire pots from several different villages of the Sepik River and Wosera areas of Papua New Guinea were featured, including canoes, both model and full-size from both the South Pacific and Northwest Coast. A superb contemporary interpretation of the traditional bentwood box by Gitksan artist Ken Mowatt was a centrepiece of this exhibition. Pottery boxes and bowls from the Walkabout group of aboriginal artists in Alice Springs, Australia, gourds from the Trobriand Islands, and lime containers from diverse groups in Papua New Guinea are additional highlights. The original works in this exhibition ranged from the functional to the symbolic; from the unadorned to the highly decorated. |
