Aron Kapaia

Aron Kapaia

Country/Region: Papua New Guinea

Tribe: Iatmul

Village: Maramba Village, Middle Sepik River

Maramba Village consists of two hamlets situated on either side of a large lagoon. Only accessible through a narrow tributary from the Sepik River, it is as beautiful as it is remote and carving continues to play an important part in the life of the village. Aron Kapaia was born here in 1950. He has carved since early childhood, when he began to learn from his father and older brothers. He was chosen to create some of the house posts for the new Haus Tambaran, which is also the Maramba Cultural Centre. As well as carvings created for traditional use, he creates contemporary works inspired by every day events in the village. His works can be found in many international collections.
