Dorothy Jarvis

Tribal Affiliation

Prince Rupert

Dorothy Jarvis was born and raised in Prince Rupert, British Columbia and has been painting in oils for over twenty years. Dorothy’s style is rich in history with a signature color palette that has attracted collectors throughout Canada and the USA.

Dorothy’s heritage of Tsimshian has greatly influenced her style and technique. Her grandparents and mother were Tsimshian, from the Village of Port Simpson, members of the Lax Kw Alaams Band, Gitwilgyoots Tribe. It is because of Dorothy’s visionary grandmother that storytelling is reflected so strongly in her artwork.

She is deeply moved by scenes of Aboriginal life and the spirits of the great totem poles. Although the Earth has reclaimed many of these majestic monuments, they live on in the paintings she creates. Dorothy continues to paint these scenes as she travels to the villages and towns along the coast and interior of British Columbia.

On a recent trip to the Nass,Skeena and Bulkley Rivers, Dorothy was able to share stories with Nisga’a elders deepening her knowledge of the indigenous history of this area.

The poles of the Tsimshian Nation and those standing along the Skeena River, Kitwanga, Moricetown and Hazeltown are magic to this artist’s brush.
