2014 saw the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon.
This North American bird went from being one of the most abundant species in the world in the 19th Century, to extinction in the early 20th Century: the last pigeon, named Martha, died at Cincinnati Zoo on September 1st 1914. Extinction was due to being shot for meat and sport and its loss of habitat.
