ARTIST'S STATEMENT On the contemporary Northwest Coast art scene, some contemporary Coast Salish artists have wittingly or unwittingly exploited and appropriated the mythology and art forms of the northern Northwest Coast for the sake of personal and financial gain. This painting, rendered in very basic Coast Salish design elements with a minor northern influence, partially reflects this contemporary Northwest Coast reality. Upon reading the title, some people might assume that it is yet another contemporary rendition of raven stealing the sun, when in reality, that traditional tale isn't really a part of many Coast Salish traditions. salish raven stole the light of the Eagle of the Dawn and created cultural conFUSION -lessLIE
