Sage Nowak is Vuntut Gwitchin and Tahltan First Nation. His grandmother, Eileen Chitze, comes from Old Crow, YT, and his late grandfather, Johnny Creyke Jr., was from Telegraph Creek, BC. Sage is from the Wolf Clan. 

 

Sage attended Alberta College of Art and Design. After years of travel, he returned to Whitehorse, Yukon where he began to study and learn Northwest coast design. Sages first teacher was Calvin Morburg, a Tlingit artist from Teslin whom he worked with for a couple of years. Later Sage attended and graduated with a First Nation Fine Arts diploma from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, Learning from master carvers Dempsey Bob, Stan Bevan, and Ken Mcneil. Sage was the 2018 recipient of the YVR Scholarship Award and was mentored in Vancouver for a year working under Tsimshian artist Phil Gray. Currently Sage Is living in Nanaimo and is apprenticing under Coast Salish artist Luke Marston.
