Artist Statement:

This diptych is a concrete poem and visual pun. It is a concrete poem in the sense that the title simultaneously names the Northwest Coast design element of split u form while also showing a human face split. This also makes it a visual pun. It is a portrait of an individual overcoming addiction. The positive and negative design spaces in the painting are literally the positive and negative reality of addicted people. The bLACK is the wHOLE content human being, while the red is the alarming addicted human being. One side is the true self, one side is the addicted self. This painting is for those who have struggled with addiction, and those who were raised around it. In my family, while I was growing up, I had to witness alcoholism, domestic violence, violence, trauma, poverty, and psychological abuse. To escape this, I went to a local park called Cowen Park. Recently, as an adult, I took a walk through Cowen Park. It was a healing experience :) I reflected on my family's struggles with addiction and how I escaped from it at Cowen Park. I realized that the innocent child at Cowen Park is still a special and sacred pART of who I am now :) I see a smALL innocent boy escaping from his family's problems to a park, looking up at the trees and dreaming of becoming an artist :) The smALL innocent six year old boy dreamed of becoming an artist :) HEre he is :)
