spLIT yoU In the spirit of spindle whorls, this contemporary Coast Salish graphic work is intended to provoke questions about aesthetic acculturation within Salish design. On first viewing this contemporary Coast Salish graphic work, some might only see a Modern Art-influenced painting, with the split u-forms and trigons not immediately perceivable. Yet with proper perspective and lighting, the Northwest Coast design elements and spindle whorl motif are recognizable. One of the influences on this work was Robert Davidson’s “Abstract Edge” works. Another influence was the four-way-split u-forms common to Nuu-chah-nulth influences, the viewer is provoked to reflect on aesthetic acculturation of the art tradition with considerable antiquity. - lessLIE
