Artist Statement:
" 'spLIT' in the spirit of spindle whorls, This contemporary coast salish design depicts a face split at the lip. This design is a mediation between written words and the coast salish oral tradition. The two faces sharing the same mouth symbolize the oral tradition. The geometric forms of triangles and circles in the design symbolize geometric forms found on coast salish weavings, which partially served as mnemonic devices.the pun the word "spLIT" is a visual pun and literal pun. The play on words represents written words, and how the painting is lit gives a full appreciation of it."
