Stars Beyond the spirit of spindle whorls, this contemporary Coast Salish deSIGN depicts a large star in the middle with four smaller stars aROUND it. The split in the star from white to a midnight blue symbolizes looking forward in space and backwards in time, which is what the human eye does when gazing at stars. The line which divides the star represents Western linear time and cultural evolution. While painting this deSIGN, I imagined myself as a contemporary Coast Salish version of the evolutionary man-ape named Moon-Watcher in Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey." As I looked forward in space and backwards in time at stars, as I looked forward in Coast Salish cultural possibilities and backwards in time at Salish spindle whorls, I imagined contemporary Coast Salish evolutionary cultural potential. One of those cultural possibilities was aesthetic acculturation from the great works featured in Robert Davidson's "Abstract Edge" exhibition, whose influence in this work should be unmistakable. Alongside this contemporary Coast Salish aesthetic acculturation was an abstract allusion to the geometric designs found in Salish weaving. The two triangles which form two halves of this painting are abstract renderings of the geometric forms found in traditional Coast Salish weaving, a cultural production beyond spindle whorls.
