As a contemporary Coast Salish artist whose oral tradition is ARTiculated through visual art, I have a mediational interest in the visual aspects of literacy. I know that Coast Salish art is a visual ARTiculation of the values and world view of Coast Salish people. After studying concrete poets and some of the visual roots of literacy, and some of the visual aspects of literacy, I know that literacy is an expression of Western values and world view. Look at literacy, and see the Western Word View words are worlds on a linear progression towards perfection every sentence is society every letter is technology every literate line is time every pAGE is a stage of cultural evolution when we write right with this literacy we help right reality This is a concrete poem I wrote as a mediational meditation on the visual aspects of literacy as it relates to Coast Salish art. As a mediational attempt between Coast Salish visual art and literacy, some of the TEXTiles which ARTiculate my artwork are attempts to make literacy visual, through the literate equivalent of the Northwest Coast design device of visual punning. This circular Coast Salish design depicts four faces in a circle, sharing the same sacRED, circular middle mouth. The four faces symbolize Coast Salish people perpetuating the oral tradition, while the middle mouth symbolizes the oral tradition. Through the oral tradition, in Coast Salish spirituality, the sacRED is subtly suggested through song and dance. if you can see the c-form if you can see the sacred inside the circle you have read the red --lessLIE
