" In Coast Salish traditions, humans are dependent on animals and nature for spiRITUALity. Animals and nature are the guardian spirits of humans. By regarding animals and nature as sacred and vital to human spiRITUALity, Coast Salish guardian spirit dancers help in guarding the existence of animals and nature. This is a reciprocal relationship which could be called "Salish Symbiosis." In this circular Coast Salish design, two human faces and four profile salmon and bird heads are depicted. The circular form of this design symbolizes holism, while the motif of four symbolizes balance. With the colors, the red vibrancy is vitality, while the deep green is ecological. The two human faces share the same sacred, circular middle mouth, which simultanously symbolizes a symbiotic sun. The four salmon heads share the same two middle mouths. The four salmon heads share the same eyes as the two humans. The eyebrows of the humans suggest the tops of the salmon heads. Finally, the upper eyelids of the humans define the lower jaws of the bird beak, while the eyebrows (the tops of the salmon heads!) of the humans are also the mouths of the four bird heads at the top and bottom of the circle of the earth. The complex visual punning of this design SYMbolizes SYMbiosis." --lessLIE
