"The idea for this project came from creating new stories and new dialogue about current events. I want to instill modern values about fish conservation and ocean health using the traditional way of telling stories with imagery. This board is the first of eight and is the introduction of the Wildman of the waves. The image on the board depicts him riding a wave with a salmon in the barrel. I chose this design to show that his "home wave" is point break at the mouth of a river. Similar to the Jordan River just outside of Victoria, BC, Canada. The next board will introduce his wife, the Wild Woman of the Waves. Board builder info: Randy Weflen of Wefi Surfboards, Vancouver Island - Fifth generation carpenter who has built Wefi hollow cedar surfboards since 2004 with global sales. The Wefi Warrior Board is a solid hand-shaped 6' thruster with its clear gold growth wood from Nootka Island. The board originated from two 6"X12"X8' pieces with two 1/4"X6" solid yellow cedar strips." Nusmata's bio: Northwest Coast native carver Jarrod Saunders is a third generation artist. Born in the Nuxalk Nation (Bella Coola, Canada), he has been carving for over 20 year. Jarrod was given the traditional name 'Nusmata' by his Grandfather and master artist, Silyas Saunders. Armed with an array of inventive modern resources, Nusmata has expanded his creative drive into graphic design, clothing, and stretched giclee prints with the intention of making First Nations art accessible to more people. having trained under multiple masters, his contemporary style is modern, colourful, and all his own. Nusmata now resides in Victoria, BC (unceded W̱SÁNEĆ, Lekwungen, and Wyomilth territories).
